What is Ayurveda Anyway ?

All ayurvedic treatments will begin with a brief consultation to determine a doshic type.  All of the below treatments are adapted specifically to your unique requirements based on that dosha.

What to expect with Ayurvedic treatments

Ayurveda or Ayurvedic medicine is an ancient system of holistic  healthcare that dates back well over 5,000 years ago.  Ayurveda uses a very individual approach to each person instead of a "one size fits all" treatment as with western medicine.  Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word which translates basically to the science of life. The primary focus of ayurvedic medicine is to prevent disease and live a healthy active lifestyle.  Treatments are offered for symptom relief however it is encouraged to practice preventative therapy first and foremost. For those following ayurvedic principles, everything that affects your physical, spiritual and emotional well being can cause you to be out of balance and cause disease or discomfort.  Some things that cause disruption include:

  • Genetic  conditions or birth defects
  • Injuries
  • Climate and season changes
  • Age
  • Emotions
  • Nutrition

There are three basic constitutions or doshic types in Ayurveda

  1. Vata
  2. Pitta
  3. Kapha

There may be many variations of these three.  Most people are different in their doshas which is why treatment is different for everyone.  This is how your body works to keep you healthy combining your unique physical and psychological characteristics that you are born with.  This is called your prakriti.  This is the constitution or doshas for which you were born and will always be, however, these may become out of balance based on the above factors. Thus we develop disease and dysfunction.

For a detailed consultation, you will be examined through one or more of the following techniques and your constitution will be determined as well as the imbalances .

  • Checking your weight
  • Pulse evaluation
  • Assessment of your eyes, teeth, tongue and skin.
  • Listening to your speech and voice
  • Possible urine analasys
  • Assessment questions related to childhood, your behaviors, diet, lifestyle
  • Medical history evaluation

Following a detailed consultation, you will be given your unique dosha type.  You will also be counseled and given instructions on dietary choices including menus, activities and lifestyle choices that will enhance your health.  Recommendation on treatment types and herbs and supplements will be given as well.
